Shane Warne: Cricket
Shane Keith Warne (born: September 13, 1969, died March 4, 2022) is a former Australian cricketer who played for the Australian national team. He is famous for his mastery of leg spin and widely regarded as one of the greatest bowlers of all-time. Warne made his Test debut in January 2, 1992 against India and his ODI debut in March 24, 1993 against New Zealand. He retired from Test cricket for Australia in 2007. He is the only specialist bowler to be selected as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Century.
Greatest Sporting Achievements
Shane Warne holds a record of 708 wickets in 145 Tests at an average of 25. He finished with 1,319 first class Test wickets at an average of 26.11. In 1994, he was named one of the Wisden Cricketers of the Year. In 1997, he was named Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World and the Wisden Leading Cricketing in the World 2004.
Why Was He So Good?
Warne is one of the greatest proponents of leg spin bowling of any era. He helped promote leg spin bowling during a period where fast bowling was very dominant. He is remembered for his character, vast array of googlies, his leg break and other armor of his leg spin.
What You May Not Know
- Shane was also a good junior Australian Rules footballer. During the cricket off-season in 1987 and 1988 he played for the St Kilda Football Club's under-19 team.
- Shane Warne played for Victoria, Hampshire, Rajasthahan Royals and Melbourne Stars.
- He made his domestic debut for Victoria in 1990. In his debut game for Victoria, his first two overs went for 20. He played in just seven first-class matches before making his debut at Test level for Australia in 1992.
- He holds an unwanted record of having scored the most runs (3043) without scoring a century. His highest Test score was 99.
- Warne had a reputation for being a bad boy, although he was disciplined during some occasions and enjoyed the odd drink.
- In 2003, he was banned from iInternational cricket for a year after being found to have taken a dieuretic, given to him by his mother, which he claimed he took look slimmer.
- He famously dated model and movie star Elizabeth Hurley.
- Cricket Australia and Sri Lanka Cricket named the Australia-Sri Lanka Test cricket series trophy the Warne-Muralidaran Trophy in honor of Shane Warne and Muttiah Muralitharan (since 2007).
