Medal counts at the Commonwealth Games tend to be heavily slanted towards the largest, industrialized nations such as England, Australia and Canada, making the games somewhat one-sided. Australia has dominated recently, finishing in the top position for every Commonwealth Games since 1990, except for 2014.
Of the 22 Games that have been held so far (including 2022), Australia has finished on the top 14 times. Next best is England with seven. The only other country to finish on top of the medal tally is Canada, in 1978 when they hosted the event in Edmonton.
See the final medal tally for 2022 Birmingham.
The limited success of the smaller nations is a source of national pride, and gives them a feeling of being part of the greater Commonwealth group. Host nations get a medal boost too, highlighted by the success of India in 2010.
The following list includes the first four ranked teams for each year. The ranking is based first on the number of gold medals, then silver and bronze. Occasionally ranking based on the total number of medals will give a different order.
