Saar existed from 1947 to 1956 in the Saarland, a part of Western Germany that was occupied in 1945 by France.
A team from Saarland did not enter the 1950 World Cup, as they were only accepted as FIFA members two weeks before the tournament.
A Saarland national football team participated in the qualifying section of the 1954 FIFA World Cup. They were drawn in Group 1 along with West Germany and Norway, in a triangular series. Saarland failed to qualify after coming second behind the West German team. West Germany went on to win the 1954 World Cup.
Saarland rejoined Germany in 1957, first becoming part of West Germany, then later a part of the united Germany.
