The Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT) is a standardized method of evaluating people after concussion in sport, composed of a series of questions and assessments. There are different versions of the assessment, SCAT, SCAT2 and SCAT3. The SCAT3 was developed at the 2012 International Summit on Concussion in Zurich, and supersedes the original SCAT and the SCAT2 published in 2005 and 2009, respectively. There is also a version for children under 13, the Child-SCAT3, also released in 2012.
equipment required: the SCAT assessment sheet and instructions.
procedure: The SCAT should be administered by a licensed healthcare professional. The test includes assessments of symptoms, orientation, memory, recall, balance and gait.
comments: Any athlete suspected of having a concussion should be removed from play, and then seek medical evaluation.
notes: not to be confused with a different SCAT test, the Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT): this questionnaire analyses an athlete's responses to a series of statements about how they feel in a competitive situation.
reference: This tool has been developed by a group of international experts at the 4th International Consensus meeting on Concussion in Sport held in Zurich, Switzerland in November 2012.
