What do you wear to the races? It really depends on which event you are going to. At regional or country race meets you can get away with very casual dress, though for a great day out you may wish to dress up and you will usually not be out of place. For some events, such as the Kentucky Derby and the Melbourne Cup, there will be strict dress codes, especially if you wish to enter the members or owners areas.
This following is a description of the attire that is required in order to enter the members enclosure at Flemington Racecourse, where the Melbourne Cup is run each year. Although the regulations are expected to vary between courses, countries and cultures, this list will give you an idea of the standards at one of Australia's premier race tracks.
- Gentlemen (and boys over 14) are required to wear a suit, sports coat or blazer, plus tie.
- Ladies (and girls over 14) are required to wear smart racewear.
- Children accompanied by an adult must be suitably attired.
The following are not acceptable: jeans, jodhpurs, shorts, parkas, windbreakers, tracksuit tops, bomber jackets, denim jackets, pullovers, track shoes, runners, thongs, peaked caps or beanies.
