The Science of Motor Sports

Motor sports is where speed, precision, and cutting-edge technology come together on the track. The motor sports is all about engineering, physics, and innovation. Here we explore the science behind the speed, from aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics to powertrains and tire technology. We also look at the drivers themselves, who are athletes worthy of applying the science of fitness and nutrition.

Fitness

Being fit is very important to motor sports athletes. They need to be both physically and mentally strong, and to use all sport science disciplines to maximize their performance. See more about fitness and fitness testing for motorsports.

Psychology

Drivers have to be mentally strong - there is a lot of pressure that they have to cope with. They must intently concentrate throughout the race, and maintain motivation. Psychological techniques are used by drivers, such as special breathing techniques, distraction blocking techniques and mind control exercises.

Diet

Fluid: Inside a F1 race car, the temperature may rise up to 60 degrees centigrade and the humidity will also be high, and in these conditions drivers can lose 3-4 liters of body fluid during a race. This fluid should be continually replaced for optimal performance.

Food: Drivers should consume a diet high in carbohydrate to fuel their bodies throughout the race.

Physics

Physics plays a great deal in the design and technique of driving a racing car. Why are F1 race cars flat and have such as wide wheel base? Find and this and more on the physics of motor sports page.
