British Empire Games: Auckland, New Zealand 1950
The 1950 British Empire Games (as the Commonwealth Games were known at the time) were held in Auckland, held between 4-11 February 1950. The Games were held in Auckland again in 1990.

Nine sports featured at the Auckland Games – track and field, boxing, cycling, fencing, lawn bowls, rowing, swimming and diving, weightlifting and wrestling.

- Auckland has hosted the Games twice,1950 and 1990.
- These were the fourth edition of the Games,
- Auckland is New Zealand's largest city.
- The opening ceremony at Eden Park was attended by 40,000 spectators, whilst nearly 250,000 people attended the Auckland Games as event spectators – a phenomenal audience given the remoteness of New Zealand in 1950.
- Twelve countries sent a total of 495 male and 95 female competitors to Auckland, nations making their debut included Malaysia and Nigeria.
- Similar to what happened twenty years previously in Hamilton, Canadian sprinter Donald Petrie, who also false started twice, was allowed back into the competition after the crowd reacted with such noise that the starter was unable to re-start the race until he was allowed back in.
- Englishman Jack Holden won the 1950 marathon in Auckland, despite being bitten by a dog.
