Fitness testing was used to attempt to find Australia's next sporting champion. The National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), as part of the Australian Sports Commission (ASC), has had a very successful history of recruiting and developing athletes in non-mainstream sports, such as rowing and skeleton. Through their website (eTID), individuals were able to submit results from fitness tests done at home, and if the results were up to a certain level the athletes were invited to be tested further and placed into a talent identification program.
Online Talent Identification
The Australian National Talent Identification and Development (NTID) program has developed an online electronic talent identification tool that is simple to use, free and allows potential athletes to assess their sporting potential. The program is only available to Australian athletes aged from 12 up to 29 years. The interactive website allows users to enter their results from a series of simple 'home-based' fitness tests. If your results are identified as above average, you will be encouraged to visit a Talent Assessment Centre (TAC) to be retested. Then athletes can be targeted into specific NTID development programs, with support for travel, training and coaching.
There are three sections; General Tests, Sport Specific and Elite Athlete.
General Tests
Descriptions of how to conduct each of the fitness tests are available online, as well as equipment required and forms for recording and submitting results. The general test protocols are listed below. The eTID website had some extra specific instructions for conducting these tests.
- Standing height
- Body mass
- Arm span
- Push-ups — using a chair, perform max number in 30 seconds.
- Vertical jump — with one hand on hip, the other raised.
- 40m sprint
- Either a shuttle run (beep test) or 1.6 km run
Sport Specific
There were specific tests for those interested in the following sports:
Elite Athletes
The eTID program was also interested in existing elite athletes that were looking for a career change. All they needed to do is provide basic personal details and sport-related information on the website.
