The Optojump is an optical measurement system, which can be used in movement tests requiring the measurement of time. Used simply, it can be used for the measurement of vertical jump height, plus lots more (see sample list below). See videos of the OptoJump System.
OptoJump Description
The OptoJump system consists of a transmitting and receiving bar, each with the dimensions 39.4 x 1.2 x 1.6 inches, and containing between 33 to 100 LEDs. One bar contains the reception and control unit, the other has the transmission electronics embedded. It is able to measure with 1/1000th second precision. It can measure all flight and ground-contact times while performing a sequence of jumps. Several elements can be connected together in order to change the length of the tracks as needed.
How It Works
The LEDs on the transmitting bar communicate continuously with those on the receiving bar. The system detects any interruptions in communication between the bars and calculates their duration. In its most simple setup, it is possible to measure flight times and ground contact times while performing any sequence of jumps.
The Software
The easy-to-use software that comes with the OptoJump hardware allows the calculations of dynamic power, elastic strength and resistance, peak and average power, dissipated energy, and reaction time to an optical and/or acoustic signals. With the software it is also possible to capture video and align it to the data recording for accurate analysis of movement.
