Here are some general rules that are part of the Tour de France.
Drafting (Slipstreaming)
- Drafting behind other riders in the peloton (the main group) is permitted and is a common tactic. Riders in the peloton can benefit from reduced air resistance by riding closely behind one another. Slipstreaming and other team tactics were initially strongly condemned by the original tour director Desgrange, and he only accepted their inevitability during the 1920s.
- Riders are generally not allowed to draft behind team cars. If a rider is seen taking advantage of this, they may receive a time penalty or be disqualified.
- In individual time trials, drafting is not allowed. Each rider races alone against the clock, and any form of drafting or outside assistance is penalized.
- In team time trials, drafting is allowed within the team. Riders work together and take turns pulling at the front, with the entire team benefiting from reduced air resistance.
Time Penalties and Disqualifications
- Time Cuts: Riders must finish within a certain percentage of the stage winner's time. Failing to do so can result in elimination.
- Penalties: Riders can receive time penalties for various infractions, such as drafting behind team cars, taking illegal shortcuts, or using banned substances.
- Disqualifications: Severe breaches of the rules, such as cheating or dangerous riding, can lead to disqualification.
- Sportsmanship: Riders must exhibit good sportsmanship. Unsportsmanlike behavior, such as pushing other riders or obstructing the race, is penalized.
Equipment and Technical Rules
- Bikes: Only UCI-approved bikes and equipment are allowed. Bikes must meet specific weight and dimension criteria.
- Helmets: Riders must wear helmets at all times during the race.
- Team Cars: Team cars follow the race and provide mechanical support, food, and drinks to riders. However, interaction is regulated to ensure fairness.
Jerseys and Classifications
- Yellow Jersey (Maillot Jaune): Awarded to the rider with the lowest overall time.
- Green Jersey (Maillot Vert): Awarded to the rider with the most points, earned through high finishes in stages and intermediate sprints.
- Polka Dot Jersey (Maillot à Pois): Awarded to the best climber, based on points earned at designated mountain stages.
- White Jersey (Maillot Blanc): Awarded to the best young rider (under 25) with the lowest overall time.
- Combativity Award (Most Aggressive Rider): Given to the rider who shows the most fighting spirit during a stage or throughout the race.
